Error Message:
“The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.” Following this message, the installation reverses and concludes, leaving the product uninstalled.
Cause:
This issue arises due to the ESD (Electronic Software Delivery) shared component, which is responsible for patch management. Specifically, the ESD component in certain POS (Point of Sale) versions requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be present on the operating system. For operating systems prior to Windows 8, .NET 3.5 was either pre-installed or automatically updated, thus not a prerequisite for POS installation. However, in Windows 8, .NET 3.5 is not enabled by default, leading to the aforementioned error when the ESD Updater service tries to initiate during the installation process without .NET 3.5.
Resolution Steps:
- Right-click the Windows Start button and select ‘Control Panel’.
- Choose ‘Turn Windows Features on or off’.
- Check the box for ‘.NET Framework 3.5’ and click ‘OK’.
- Proceed with the Point of Sale installation.
Additional Information:
After completing these steps, earlier versions of POS (V7-V10) should install and function correctly. This solution has been confirmed through testing.
Hope this information is helpful!
